In this Guitar Secrets guitar lesson, you will learn musical timing symbols including the whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth note and whole rest as played in the guitar exercises. You will learn to incorporate each example to increase your picking speed and master each timing exercise. You will also learn the half rest, quarter rest, eighth rest and sixteenth rest. You will also learn the A minor pentatonic scale using triplets, quadruplets and sextuplets.

In example 1.1 below, you will learn the whole note. The whole note symbol is shown below. The whole note is located on the (A) note and the whole note equals 4 beats. The guitar tablature has also been included and is illustrated under the whole note example 1. The illustration for the whole note shows that you pick the (A) note on the first beat and then you count a total of 4 beats and move to the next measure.

In example 1.2, the half note has been illustrated and equals 2 beats. I've included two half notes, one on the 1st beat and the other on the 3rd beat. Once again, we will use the (A) note. Tap your foot and count 1-2-3-4 and pick the (A) note on the 1st and 3rd beat. If you have a metronome, you can set it to a comfortable setting and practice each example and increase the speed as you become more comfortable.

In example 1.3, the quarter note has been illustrated. You would pick the quarter note 4 times, one time per each beat. Count 1-2-3-4 and play the (A) four times, one time for each beat.

In example 2 below, we will use the eighth note which equals 1/2 beat. For this guitar exercise you would count 1 an 2 an 3 an 4 an. For the eighth note, you would pick the note twice per beat or a total of 8 times in the measure. Set your metronome to a slower speed and pick the (1) and the (an) note on the down and up strokes of the pick. You can just use your finger if you don't use a pick or if you're playing the classical guitar.

In the sixteenth 1/4 beat example 2, you play 16 notes per measure. You can really burn up the guitar fretboard by learning this guitar timing technique. To master the sixteenth notes, you will need to alternate the pick down and up on each note you play. Start out slow and use the tablature and illustrations below.

The illustration in example 3 shows you the timing symbols for each of the timing examples above.

In the first measure below, the tablature shows you how to play the A minor pentatonic starting on the Low E string to the high E string. This position is also called the root note fret position. You really should know this fingering pattern if you've studied the A minor pentatonic scale lessons. If you're not familiar, you should go back and learn that lesson. The tablature then shows you how to play the A minor pentatonic scale, root note fret position using guitar triplets. You will play both ascending and descending along the guitar fretboard. Remember, you should alternate the guitar pick, down and up and then maybe up and down. These exercises, will really help you master the pentatonic scale, triplets and picking exercises.

The next illustration shows you how to play the A minor pentatonic scale using quintuplets which are groups of 5 notes. You will also learn sextuplets and quadruplets. These guitar exercises should really help you gain speed and dexterity. Practice each example slow and build speed as you become more comfortable.
