A minor grouping

Home

The next illustration will be that of the A minor pentatonic scale scanning 5 different positions. Now you will be really moving around the fretboard. In this exercise you will be playing from left to right. Everything starts on the G note or the 3rd fret Low E string. Look at the illustration above. We will be using the orange, yellow, blue, green and red circles above to play the next exercise. This exercise is to help you play in different positions and combine some of the positions we have covered. This exercise starts on the G note.

Look at the illustrations below. The first illustration shows the exercise with the notes. The second illustration shows the fingers that play it. 1-3, 1-3 slide down two frets. As soon as you hit the second 3 you slide and never pick the note that you slid to. Then 1-3, 1-3 slide again. Finish off the scale with 1-3, 1-3, 3. You will be ending on the high E 12th fret. You need to practice this over and over again until you have it completely memorized.

Now Listen to this run

Look above and find the G note on the Low E string 3rd fret. Play that note with your 1 finger. Now find the A note on the Low E string 5th fret. Play that note with your 3 finger.
The next note will be on the A string 3rd fret. Play that C note with your 1 finger. The next note is again on the A string, but this time as soon as you pick it slide your 3 finger down to the 7th fret same A string. This is how leads are really played. You play both of those notes by only picking the string one time.

The next note played is on the D string, 5th fret 1 finger. Play that note. The next note played again on the D string 7th fret 3 finger.

Then move to the G string 1 finger 5th fret. Play that note. The next note is still on the G string 3 finger 7th fret play that note, then slide down two frets to the 9th fret after picking that note only once. Look below and notice the 3 sliding from the 7th fret to the 9th fret.

Now you would move to the B string, 1 finger 8th fret. The next note is still on the B string 3 finger, 10th fret. The last notes are on the high E string 1 finger 8th fret, then 3 finger 10th fret and 3 finger 12th fret all on the high E string.

By playing this exercise over and over again you will begin to come up with your own ideas. Pieces of the puzzle will start to come together.

Good Luck,
