The notes in this exercise are played from left to right. It may be a good idea to look over the tablature chapter. To play the first exercise, start at the 3rd fret Low E string which is the fattest string. You play 4 notes to each string, one note at a time using the fingers 1-2-3-4. Then move down to the A string, 1-2-3-4 always picking down and then up. Continue playing 4 notes to every string one at a time. Then reverse this process moving back up from the high E or thinnest string 4-3-2-1 to the Low E string.

You can use the Drum Track to keep timing for you. You can play one note per beat if you like.

1 = Index
2 = Middle
3 = Ring
4 = Pinkie
T = Thumb

Start by placing your 1 finger on 3rd fret Low E string as illustrated above. You would then play that note. You would then place your 2 finger on the 4th fret Low E string and play that note.

This illustration shows the 2 finger at the 4th fret playing the next note. Then you would move to the 5th fret with your 3 finger and finally to the 6th fret with your 4 finger. You can then move to the next string (A) and repeat the process.

When you become comfortable playing this exercise, you may want to start on the 6th or 7th fret or any where you like. Keep the same fingering 1-2-3-4 on each string and remember to pick down and then up. Your fingers may get tired or have a difficult time stretching, but it will eventually become easier.

The numbers represent the fingers and frets you play. Start at the Low E string. 1,2 - 2,1   2,3 - 3,2   3,4 - 4,3 and so on all the way through each string. Alternate the pick down and up.

Drum Track

This is an excellent exercise. Once again the numbers are your fingers and the frets. Once you're   comfortable with this exercise, try to play it without using your picking hand.

Hammer ons and pull offs.

Play one note at a time 1,2,1  2,3,2  3,4,3  2,3,2.

Start on the Low E string and work your way down using each string. Start with your 1 finger on the first fret and then the 2 finger on the 2nd fret, then the 3 finger on the 3rd fret and the 4 finger on the 4th fret.

This is a good exercise to a get good handle on the Am pentatonic scale in the root note position. Alternate the pick down and then up.
Also try to pick using just down strokes.

Listen to the example above.
