Guitar progressions using the open A, D and E guitar chords

Up ] A Progression ] [ Open A Progression ] Guitar Rhythm ] Root 5 and 6 Progression ]

This guitar progression does note use th bar chords, but uses the open position chords. The chords will be the open position A chord, D chord and the E chord.

The open positon A chord is illustrated below. It is played on the second fret and you use the index finger. Hold down the D, G and B strings. Then strum from the open A string down to the the high E string. The notes of the A chord are A, C# and E.

The open positon D chord is illustrated below. The index fiinger is on the G string, second fret, the middle figner is on the high E string second fret and the ring finger is onteh B string, 3rd fret. Strum the strings starting from the open D string. The notes of the D major chord are D, F# and A.

The open positon E chord is illustrated below. The index finger is on the G string, 1st fret, the middle finger is on the A string, 2nd fret and the ring finger is on the D string, 2nd fret. Strum from the open Low E string through the rest of the strings.

Cound slowly and evenly from 1 to 4 playing the indicated chord on the indicated count.

You can play lead guitar using the A major pentatonic scale over the A chord, D major pentatonic scale over the D chord and E major pentatonic over the E chord. You could even use the A major pentatonic or A major scale over the complete progression.

Practice this chord progression a few hundred times and we'll see you in the next lesson. Just a quick tip, eventually you will want to record these progressions so you can improvise over them.
