A minor Pentatonic exercises and grouping of positions
The next illustration will be that of the A minor pentatonic scale scanning 5 different positions. Now you will be really moving around the fret-board. In this exercise you will be playing from left to right. Everything starts on the G note of the 3rd fret Low E string. This exercise will help you move around in different positions and combine some of the positions we have learned. This exercise starts on the G note.
Look at the illustrations below. The first illustration shows the exercise with the notes. The second illustration shows the fingers that play the exercise. 1-3, 1-3 slide down two frets. As soon as you hit the second 3 you slide and never pick the note that you slid to. Then 1-3, 1-3 slide again. Finish off the scale with 1-3, 1-3, 3. You will be ending on the high E 12th fret. You need to practice this over and over again until you have it completely memorized.
1 = Index finger
2 = Middle
3 = Ring
4 = Pinkie
T = Thumb
Use the illustration below and suggested fingering pattern to play from fret 3 to fret 12, up and down the fret-board.
Look above and find the G note on the Low E string 3rd fret. Play that note with your 1 finger. Now find the A note on the Low E string 5th fret. Play that note with your 3 finger.
The next note will be on the A string 3rd fret. Play that C note with your 1 finger. The next note is again on the A string, but this time as soon as you pick it slide your 3 finger down to the 7th fret same A string. This is how leads are really played. You play both of those notes by only picking the string one time.
