The illustration below shows the notes of the Dm chord laid out on the fret board. Try to pick each note and memorize the positions. The D note is the root note for the Dm chord.

Check out the D Dorian mode below, you can see how the notes relate to this mode. Pick out the notes of the Dm chord as illustrated above and improvise in your lead work. Lay down the Dm chord on tape and then play this mode and some arpeggios over it.

Once again the illustration below has all the notes of the key of C major. The chords in the key of C major are: C Dm Em F G Am B dim. The notes in the Dm chord are D F and A. It is a good idea to learn all the positions of each note in each chord. Record the Dm chord on tape and play the notes above. Once you are familiar with these notes, play the Dm pentatonic scale or the D Dorian mode over the Dm that has been recorded.

Locate the notes in the Dm chord, D F and A in the illustration below. Notice that there is a Dm pentatonic root note fret at the 10th fret below. The fingering would be the same as the Am pentatonic scale we have learned at the 5th fret. The fingering for the Dm pentatonic scale starting at the 10 fret D note would be, 1-4, 1-3, 1-3, 1-3, 1-4, 1-4. All the major and minor pentatonic scales should be learned and mastered.  Check out some Dm progressions. Check out the major pentatonic scales.

The Dm chord to the left is made up 3 notes. The 3 notes are D, F, A.
Try to play these notes in as many different places as possible. You will eventually memorize each note and its position.

Good Luck,
